Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session the delegate will:

  • Discuss the role of the commissioner and examine common issues that arise when deciding what must be covered in the commissioning report.
  • Identify who the report is aimed at and the need to address the demands of the different departments.
  • Examine and discuss what should be included and what should be left out.
  • Explore how to write using clean language that will help the reader to understand your offering and how they can bring benefit and added value to the commission.
  • Consider the current needs of local government and how this has an influence on the success of the commission.
  • Identify why some bids are successful and others fail.

During this session we will cover:

  • The purpose of commissioning, what are the audience expecting to see in your bid?
  • The Commissioning Cycle and what needs to happen at each stage.
  • How the commissioning is linked to the purchasing cycle.
  • Third sector commissioning.
  • The Eight Principles of good commissioning.
  • How to ensure your document tells a story of what you intend to do by presenting the business case and how it will meet the needs of the intended beneficiaries.
  • The use of clean language to get your point across but in a tone that is professional and persuasive.
  • How to present conclusions and recommendations.

Methods of delivery:

During this course we will draw on the expertise within the team and explore how commissioning takes place for your department. We examine samples of successful documents and the do’s and don’ts to be aware of when planning your document.
