Learning Outcomes 

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Identify carers according to the local authorities definition
  • Revisit and understand the key principles of the Care Act
  • Highlight the key aspects arising from the Prevention and Information and Advice duties
  • Identify the requirements and responsibilities for the assessment of carers needs under the Care Act 2014, Carers and Disabled Children Act 2000, the Department of Health guidance and Council policy and procedures
  • Understand how to adopt a Strengths Based Approach in assessment and support planning
  • Identify personal outcomes and distinguish between these and eligibility outcomes
  • Identify internal mechanisms and potential resources which are available from the private and voluntary sector to inform and support carers
  • Undertake carer assessments effectively, with confidence and increased informed empathy
  • Apply the minimum eligibility threshold for carers
  • Determine consequential significant impact
  • Provide clear evidence to substantiate the eligibility decision
  • Adopt creative solutions in support planning and identify meaningful outcome focused care packages including the need for respite care
  • Understand issues of safeguarding and mental capacity as they relate to carer’s assessments
  • Clarify the meaning of a joint or combined assessment and identify when this is appropriate/desired
  • Understand the importance of establishing consent and adhering to the Data Protection and the GDPR guidelines throughout the assessment process
  • Identify key learning points from relevant Ombudsman complaints
