Overview

A one day course for those supporting children and young people who experience domestic abuse aims to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to effectively respond to the needs of these vulnerable individuals. The course will ensure that professionals are well-equipped to provide comprehensive and compassionate support to children and young people who have experienced domestic abuse.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course delegates will have:- 

  • Gained a deeper understanding of the effects of domestic abuse on children and young people, including emotional, psychological, and physical impacts.
  • Learnt to identify the signs and symptoms of domestic abuse in children and young people, including behavioral changes and physical indicators.
  • Developed skills to communicate effectively with children and young people who have experienced domestic abuse, ensuring they feel heard and supported.
  • Learnt how to create and implement safety plans tailored to the needs of children and young people, ensuring their immediate and long-term safety.
  • Gained knowledge about available support services and resources, and learn how to signpost children and parents to these services
  • Understood the legal framework surrounding domestic abuse, including protective measures and the rights of children and young people.
  • Learnt the importance of working collaboratively with other agencies and professionals to provide a coordinated response to domestic abuse.
  • Developed strategies to help children and young people build resilience and cope with the trauma of domestic abuse.
  • Understood the importance of cultural sensitivity and how to provide support that respects the diverse backgrounds and experiences of children and young people.
  • Recognised the importance of self-care for professionals working with children and young people affected by domestic abuse, and learn strategies to manage stress and vicarious trauma ( sticky trauma) in order to prevent burnout
