Overview

his one day programme is for those with responsibility for safeguarding practice in fostering organisations including front line managers, senior managers and members of fostering panels. Its focus is on the national policy and legislative context and how this, along with evidence from research and practice informs safeguarding work. The course will apply this national context to the specific issues that need to be addressed when managing a foster care service.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the day participants will have had an opportunity to:

  • Understand the current policy and legislative context as it relates to safeguarding practice with children
  •  Consider lessons from research and reviews of practice and what they tell us about keeping children safe in foster care
  • Explore the complexity of managing risk in safeguarding work and the role of the manager in ensuring staff are supported and supervised to think clearly under pressure
  • Consider the relative roles and responsibilities of fostering social workers and children’s social workers within the safeguarding system and how managers can promote role clarity and a focus on the child
  • Understand how to intervene most effectively at specific points within the safeguarding process, for example strategy discussions and child protection conferences/core groups.
