Overview

The aim of this course is for the participants to be able to plan, prepare and conduct an interview with a victim and or witness, complying with the requirements and competences compatible with carrying out an interview and investigation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role of the investigator/s during an investigation
  • Explain the meaning of the Legal Framework
  • Explain the meaning of Investigative Skills
  • Discuss the impact the Human Rights Act can or may have during the course of an investigation
  • In relation to vulnerable persons and discuss the reasonable adjustments / special measures that maybe put in place to protect persons who may fall into the category of vulnerable.
  • Identify the appropriate methods of communication that must be used when managing and dealing with victims, witnesses and suspects
  • Discuss the consequences that may occur if negative communication methods are displayed/used during an investigation and the effects it may have on individuals, the organisation and the community as a whole
  • Discuss the possible impacts negative and discriminatory behaviour may have on a victim or witness.
  • Identify the relevant persons, agencies and / or departments who may need to have some involvement in your investigation (This will of course depend on the allegations or complaint.
  • Explain and demonstrate how to plan and prepare for an interview with a victim or witness
  • Explain the phases of Achieving Best evidence and how this fits in with the interview model
  • Demonstrate how to conduct and carry out an interview with a victim or witness
