Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course delegates will be able to:-

  • Describe the barriers that may prevent individuals from disclosing abuse or seeking help.
  • Understand domestic abuse and recognise its various forms, including coercive and controlling behaviour.  
  • Identify common signs and indicators of domestic abuse in adults and children.  
  • Understand the short- and long-term impacts of domestic abuse on victims and survivors and their families  
  • Know how and when to refer individuals to appropriate support services, in line with local safeguarding procedures.
  • Consider the impact of domestic abuse on both the victim and (the perpetrators – moved to Mod 3) emotional and mental health and how to support and signpost appropriately (moved from Mod 1, originally located in Mod 2)  
  • Consider learning from local case reviews (Serious Adults Reviews, Domestic Homicide Reviews and Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews)
  • Increase understanding of victims’ responses to domestic abuse including why they may stay in an abusive relationship, or return back to the relationship
