Overview

This course will enable workers who are engaged in work with children and families to develop effective ways and build confidence in working with difficult behaviour, in order to recognise potential impacts on professional dynamics and multi-agency child protection work when professionals are faced with working with families who are hostile and evasive.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will have:

  • Identified organisational and multi-agency contexts, which can help or hinder effective collaborative working in supporting families who are hostile and/or evasive towards professionals.
  • Described challenges to own and collective value base when faced with challenging service user behaviours.
  • Developed a shared understanding of concepts of ‘dangerous’, ‘evasive’ and ‘difficult’.
  • Identified a shared understanding of impacts of hostility and evasiveness on professionals and multi-agency dynamics. Critically reflect on the consequences for assessment and management of risk to children and young people.
  • Described the impact on children and young people of living in threatening situations and ways to ensure children’s experiences remain central.
  • Renewed knowledge relating to self-care including ways in which professionals can support each other to ensure working together remains effective in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • Demonstrated skills and confidence in working with other professionals to identify strategies to ensure children and young people’s needs and safety remain central
