Learning Outcomes

On conclusion of the course, participants will have:

  • Developed key skills for communicating effectively with autistic adults with a variety of profiles in demanding and one-off situations (e.g. new assessment, safeguarding enquiry etc.). (Complements knowledge of communication strategies covered in Autism in Practice: Working with Autistic adults)
  • Developed enhanced awareness of autism specific issues in assessment and appropriate adaptations in the context of Care Act requirements [Includes reflecting on issues arising from working through and with family members of autistic clients and the use of advocates] (Complements increased knowledge of autism from Autism in Practice: Working with Autistic adults)
  • Increased understanding of eligibility decision making for autistic adults and how autism may affect each of the 10 outcomes (Care Act eligibility criteria) (Complements increased knowledge of autism from Autism in Practice: Working with Autistic adults)
  • Developed advanced skills in person-centred care and support planning and reviews with autistic clients: ‘Wellbeing’ for autistic adults – what is a ‘good life’? in the context of Care Act care planning (Complements increased knowledge of autism from Autism in Practice: Working with Autistic adults)
  • Developed enhanced awareness of autism specific issues in capacity assessment and best interests decision making in the context of the Mental Capacity Act [MCA ‘all practicable steps’] (Complements knowledge of practical strategies for supporting decision making covered in Autism in Practice: Working with Autistic Adults)
  • Developed enhanced awareness of autism specific issues in safeguarding including issues around sex (including online issues); social behaviour; trust/honesty; risk perception and resistance to change (in the context of Care Act Safeguarding)
  • Increased skills in managing risk with autistic clients: reflecting on neurotypical assumptions in decision making (in the context of Care Act Safeguarding)
  • Knowledge of what other materials can be accessed and where, to find out more information for own professional development
