Autism is sometimes referred to as a spectrum, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD); it is not a learning disability, but around half of autistic people may also have a learning disability. Working with and supporting people in care living with both these conditions requires a special understanding and this course has been designed to enhance awareness of this approach

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will have a good understanding of:

  • Statutory context, the law and human rights of people with learning disabilities and autism
  • What autism/learning disabilities are, and how they affect people differently
  • Working with and supporting people in care living with learning disability/autism
  • How to relate to sensory issues/learning disabilities issues and adapt behaviour around them
  • How those in care with learning disability/autism can be supported 
  • Why it may be necessary to communicate to the person in a specific way and ensure that this is within the support plans
  • The balance in communicating between verbal, text, email and how to give clear and direct communication
  • How to identify a meltdown/shutdown and what can be done to prevent them, strategies for coping / helping
  • Health and Wellbeing needs of people with learning disabilities/autism
  • How to draw up a strong hospital plan detailing people needs, prepping for hospital/medical appointments - advocacy and planning needed for this
  • Practical experience/examples of everyday working environment where there is interaction with autistic individuals/individuals with learning disabilities
