Overview

This training is designed to equip practitioners with the knowledge and understanding of Knife Crime in the UK. It is designed to develop their skills and abilities to practise empathy, and some useful practical tools to support young people facing risks related to exploitation, gangs, and knife crime. Through trauma-informed approaches and real-life case studies, participants will explore the complex social and emotional factors that influence young people's decisions and behaviours and learn how to respond in ways that build trust, safety, and long-term support.

Practitioners in social care who wish to develop their skills in supporting young people facing risks related to exploitation, gangs, and knife crime.

Learning Outcomes

On conclusion of the course, participants will be able to: 

  • List the UK legislation relating to Knife crime including statistics and crime trends both nationally and regionally
  • Understand the legal terms for knife crime under the Offensive Weapons Act 2019.
  • Identify the sentencing and penalties relating to knife crime
  • Describe the socio-economic factors associated with knife crime
  • Explore the emotional and behavioural indicators that may signal a young person is at risk of carrying a weapon.
  • Discuss the psychological and social pressures influencing decisions around safety and self-protection.
  • Explore the behavioural signs and physical indicators that may suggest a person is carrying a knife/weapon and their potential involvement in knife crime
  • Discuss how to have supportive conversation with a person at risk, responding with empathy and curiosity using trauma-informed language and active listening.
  • Actively follow safeguarding policies and procedures that protects an individual at risk whilst maintaining dignity and respect. Reflect on personal biases and organisational culture to ensure inclusive, non-stigmatising responses.
  • Understand the importance of working with partner agencies i.e. police, schools. Consider signposting individuals to specialist services.
