By the end of the course delegates will be able to:-
- To gain an understanding of the roles and procedures which are used within the different types of courts
- To become aware of the strategies to use when being called to become a witness in court and providing evidence or being cross-examined.
- To develop the skills in writing succinct and analytical reports for use at court
- Provide a brief understanding of the different types of courts including Magistrates, County and High Courts in Criminal, Civil and Family cases.
- An understanding of the process for Coroners Court including the types of cases dealt with the court, who attends and the powers of the court.
- Preparation of witness statements including the difference between descriptive and analytical writing, how to write succinct and analytical court reports; use of local authority legal teams.
- Understanding and expectations of being a witness in court. This will cover many of the practical issues e.g. appropriate court etiquette and terminology, how a witness statement is presented.
- Giving evidence in court. Including the process and practice, dealing with lawyers, handling cross examination-where to stand, what to say, how to address the court, making sure evidence is heard and presented to the best effect so the court hears and understands what is wanted to be put across.
- Associated out-of-court protocols such as discussing ‘bundle’ out of court
