
Understanding & Managing Children’s Complex Behaviours & Needs
Course Overview
The aim of this course is to help foster carers develop their understanding of children with complex needs and behaviours. There will be an opportunity for foster carers to consider their knowledge of child development and how to communicate effectively with children and young people.

Course Outcomes
By the end of the course, participants will
- Understand what is meant by complex needs and behaviours
- be able to identify children and young peoples’ needs using a model of development that offers practical guidance and ideas (SPICES)
- Have gained awareness of what drives behaviour, using theories of human development. (understand what makes children ‘tick’)
- Develop ideas of how to manage different types of behaviour and how to recognise when a child is entering into fight/flight behaviours and trauma responses
