WHO WILL BENEFIT?

The seminar programme is evidence-based & arises from extensive experience & research at both The Walton Centre for Neurology & St Thomas's Hospital (INPUT) Pain Management Programmes. Both large and small healthcare environments will be catered for and the programme will be of interest not just to health professionals working with chronic pain patients in hospitals and clinics, but also to multi disciplinary professionals in, for example, physiotherapy practices and departments, occupational health depts in organisations and companies and staff in general practices/primary care. These professionals include: doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists, general practitioners and their practice staff and occupational health nurses and doctors . Rehabilitation staff and alternative practitioners may also benefit.

WHAT IS THE AIM OF THE SEMINAR?

  • Epidemiology: understanding the scale of the chronic pain problem; how common is chronic pain? the cost and incidence of chronic pain; future trends
  • Causes of chronic pain
  • Factors influencing pain
  • Chronic pain in the workplace: eg back pain heavy lifting; twisting, job stress, healthier lifestyle, physical exercise, relaxation, site safety, disability management, promotion of return to work.
  • Chronic pain treatments.

SESSION 2 (Dr E.Ghadiali)

11.05 to 12.05

  • Psychology of Pain: IHistory, evolution, structure, benefits. Rationale, success.
  • Why they work: Importance of Psychology in chronic pain: Influence of gender, age, culture, social factors, pain tolerance, pain expression
  • Chronic pain syndrome: how chronic pain develops; depression and pain; anxiety and pain, downward spiral of pain, distress and disability, family relationships, effects on the workplace; economic influences through loss of income, reliance on benefit etc.
  • Case Histories
  • The Pain Management Programme: History, Evolution etc.
  • Practical issues in setting up a Pain Management Programme: The larger programme; the small practice based programme

  • Psychological evaluation: use of psychometric tests, interview techniques, stages of change, assessing motivation

  • Content & Structure of PMP: timetable, staffing, accommodation
  • Audit: How to measure change
  • Use of psychology in pain management

SESSION 4 (Joint Session)

  • Psychological Therapies: Pain Management techniques, use of psychology in pain management, cognitive behaviour therapy, role of attitudes and beliefs, pain perception and behaviour, use of cognitive techniques in modifying negative thoughts, pacing, relaxation, value of individual and group therapy
  • Physical Therapies: graded exercise, 'hands off' physiotherapy
  • Dealing with Difficult Patients
  • Teamwork
  • Preventing relapse: use of self-help groups

THE SPEAKERS

Dr J.C.D. Wells & Dr E.J. Ghadiali were responsible for starting Britain's first pain management programme at The Walton Centre for Neurology & Neurosurgery, Liverpool in 1983. Dr Wells is a Consultant Anaesthesist and former Director of the Centre for Pain Relief, home of Europe's largest pain clinic; Dr Ghadiali is Consultant Clinical Neuro-Psychologist & Director, The Walton Pain Management Programme. Both men are regarded as lively, authoritative and entertaining speakers thoughout the world and demand for places is expected to be high.
