DIVERSITY IN HEALTHCARE

A 1-day on site seminar on cultural issues in healthcare

Britain is a multi-cultural and multi-racial society incorporating many different traditions, values and beliefs. This diversity has implications for healthcare because culture influences the ways in which people think about their health, the treatment they expect when they become ill and the care they regard as appropriate. Health professionals need to have an understanding of the diverse ways in which cultural values and beliefs impact on healthcare because, if services are not suited to clients' needs, individuals are deterred from seeking help early. There is a lot of evidence to show that members of minority groups have higher levels of mortality and morbidity in relation to certain health problems. Significant differences in the uptake of and experience in services between minority groups and the majority population can drive up the costs of health care. This seminar is intended to help health professionals examine cultural values and beliefs as a basis for adapting and improving practice so that everyone, regardless of their background, is able to use mainstream services effectively to improve and maintain their health.

WHO WILL BENEFIT?

Nurses, Midwives, Health Visitors, Doctors, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and other health professionals working in community or hospital settings. The seminar can also be adapted to meet the needs of managers, senior healthcare personnel and general staff such as receptionists.

WHAT IS THE AIM OF THE SEMINAR?

This seminar will help you to

  • develop an understanding of the different ways in which culture can influence what people think of as health, illness, treatment and care;
  • consider the implications of that thinking for patient care/service provision in your field of practice;
  • introduce changes in your practice/service provision using a research-based framework;
  • identify further sources of help and support.

This is an on-site seminar which can be brought to your workplace for up to 30 people. Costs are estimated on the distance our trainer has to travel, so for a quote under no obligation, please call Wendy Bennett 0151-632-0662 or email: wendy@talkinglife.co.uk

WRITING FOR PUBLICATION

A 1-day on site seminar for health professionals

In healthcare, writing about your work and your ideas is a way of helping others to share and learn from your experience. For example, you might wish to explain a new procedure or a novel way of implementing an established practice or a different way of organising care. Alternatively you might wish to discuss a particular incident or report research findings. Your publication will encourage others to think about these matters and try out your ideas for themselves, perhaps reporting back to you about their own outcomes. Students and other less experienced professionals can learn about your field of practice directly from you even though they may never meet you face to face. Publishing increases your sphere of influence and helps you to make contact with others who share your interests and develop a professional network of contacts on a local, national and even international basis. Finally, publications can help to publicise the good practice that takes place in your work setting and enhance both the way people feel about their work and the image of the organisation as a forward-thinking and interesting place to be. This seminar will help you to get started by taking you through the steps involved in producing a publication.
