DEPRESSION
has a devastating effect not just on the people suffering from it, but
also on their families friends and work colleagues. The cost to the NHS
and to industry of inadequate treatment is enormous. But effective
treatments do exist and most can be delivered by
non-specialists.
WHO WILL BENEFIT?
Nurses, Doctors, Health visitors, Occupational health staff,
Counsellors and other health and social care professionals who do not
already have specialist training in depression. This practical programme
is designed for anyone working in a health or social care role in the
community who wants to know more about how to help people with
depressive illnesses. Not suitable for Mental Health
specialists.
WHAT IF I DO NOT FIT INTO THESE CATEGORIES?
The seminar programme is suitable for anyone working with
patients/clients who have depression & who do not already have training
in depression. The list might include social workers, care home workers,
voluntary sector workers, pharmacists, chiropodists, alternative
practitioners, health promotion specialists, general hospital staff and
people in related fields.
WHAT IS THE AIM OF THE SEMINAR?
The programme is designed to provide you with:
- Up to date information on the epidemiology and aetiology of depression.
- An opportunity to upgrade your knowledge on the recognition, assessment and effective treatment of a condition which affects large numbers of people.
- The means to explore options for drug and non-drug treatments and ways of supporting your patients/clients and their carers within a team-based approach
- Evidence-based tools to help your patients/ clients in everyday practice.

09.30 - 10.40: SESSION 1:
- Introductions and outline of the day
- The trouble with depression...
Depression in primary care: prevalence, levels of
severity, attitudes and stigma; the practice context;national standards.
- Understanding and explaining depression.
WHO guidelines; explaining to patients/clients;
the depression continuum; symptoms of major depression.
- Causes and risk factors.
Depression and life transitions; predisposing, precipitating and maintaining factors; biological,
psychological and social aspects; high risk groups.
10.40 - 11.05: COFFEE
11.05 - 12.30: SESSION 2:
- Assessing depression.
What to assess; how to assess in short consultations; when to assess and re-assess
- Using an evidence-based assessment tool.
Screening and assessment tools - advantages and disadvantages, acceptability to patients, how to use in practice
12.30 - 13.30: LUNCH BREAK
13.30 - 15.00: SESSION 3:
- Risk assessment - key steps.
Suicide and self harm; practice protocols; referral criteria
- The importance of information and follow-up
What is available, how to get it, how to use it; nurse's role in follow-up
- Non-drug approaches for depression
Cognitive behavioural therapy, structured problem solving, counselling; brief psychological techniques for practice; self care and self help.
15.00 - 15.20: TEA
15.20 - 16.30: SESSION 4:
- Anti-Depressant Therapy
Antidepressants: types, mode of action, side effects, dosage, length of treatment, enhancing treatment adherence
- A team approach to treating depression
Working styles; what is it like in your place of work? more effective depression care
