MANAGING DEPRESSION EFFECTIVELY

DEPRESSION has a devastating effect not just on the people suffering from it, but also on their families friends and work colleagues. The cost to the NHS and to industry of inadequate treatment is enormous. Effective treatments do exist, both with and without drugs. This is one of a programme of two seminars designed to focus on either Assessment or Management of Depression. It is not necessary for you to have attended the one on Assessment for you to benefit from this one on Management.

 WHO WILL BENEFIT?

Nurses, Doctors, Health visitors, Occupational health staff, Counsellors and other health and social care professionals. This practical programme is designed for anyone working in a health or social care role in the community who works with people with depressive illnesses.

 WHAT IF I DO NOT FIT INTO THESE CATEGORIES?

The seminar programme is suitable for anyone working with patients/clients who have depression. The list might include social workers, care home workers, voluntary sector workers, pharmacists, chiropodists, alternative practitioners, health promotion specialists, general hospital staff and people in related fields.

 WHAT IS THE AIM OF THE SEMINAR?

The programme is designed to help you:

  • Develop a structured approach to managing depression
  • Increase your awareness of Non Drug approaches
  • Improve existing knowledge of anti-depressant therapy
  • Explore ways in which you may play a role in monitoring/managing patients or clients with depression

THE SPEAKERS

The speaker will be:
JANE ELWOOD RGN, is a
Practice Nurse in a busy practice, runs depression clinics and is a leading depression trainer. She is a trainer for The Depression Care Training Centre etc. She has been running Depression workshops for NHS staff around the U.K. for many years. or

MARTIN DAVIES RMN,Dip.CPN., is principle tutor for the Depression Care Training Centre and has been running workshops for NHS staff around the U.K. for many years. He is also a prolific cartoonist and author on mental health subjects.

  • Introduction and outline of the day
  • Needs & wants - Brainstorm
  • Setting the context - prevelance-severity-attitudes and stigma
    WHO guidelines /Criteria for major depression .

  • Review of Assessment
  • What, How and When to Assess and Reassess including Suicide Assessment

10.40 - 11.00: COFFEE

11.00 - 12.30: SESSION 2:

  • Overview of Antidepressant medication
  • Who and when to treat
  • Patient Information
  • Improving concordance
  • Monitoring

12.30 - 13.30: LUNCH

13.30 - 15.00: SESSION 3:

  • Non Drug approaches
  • What do we already know about/use/or have heard of?
  • Signposting
    Useful techniques to use with patients/clients
  • Problem solving
  • Cogntive Behavioural Therapy

15.00-15.20: TEA

15.20: Action Planning

15.40: Anti Depressant Quiz
