AN INTRODUCTION TO COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL TECHNIQUES

A 2-day training course

Cognitive Behavioural Techniques (CBT) are well-recognised therapeutic approaches for a range of both emotional and physical health problems. CBT involves a range of techniques that aim to recognise and challenge types of thinking & behaviours that cause us difficulty. There unfortunately exists a somewhat 'elitist' attitude amongst many that it is a specialist intervention that requires many years of training and practice, however in recent times it has also been recognised that cognitive behavioural skills can be learned easily, and can be applied in short consultations as well as in day-to-day relationships and experiences by almost anyone. This course provides the introductory framework, based on valued 'CBT' models, to enable participants to understand and apply basic principles. It is also used as a self-development tool and can improve self-esteem and assertiveness.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

Clinical / Social Care staff: All clinical (medical/nursing/OT/Physio etc) and Social Care staff can use CBT for patients/clients either directly, or as part of their professional development and leadership skills.

Non-clinical: Managerial and administration staff, who may wish to improve self-esteem and develop teamworking skills.

Also suitable for appropriate students/locums/trainees.

WHO IS THE COURSE NOT FOR?

Specialist mental health staff, psychology and others who already have experience/training in CBT. This is an introductory course for non-specialists.

COURSE FORMAT

Ideally this is a 2-day course with a gap of one to two weeks in between each session. A 1-day course can be provided, but this will not be able to provide the additional methods of how to apply the CBT principles. This is NOT suitable for a half-day session.

WHAT IS THE AIM OF THE SEMINAR?

Cognitive Behavioural Techniques (CBT) encourage individuals to:

  • Recognise & challenge previously held beliefs.
  • Make links between our thoughts, feelings, behaviours and our
  • emotional/physical symptoms.
  • Develop techniques of self-help.
  • Increase insight & awareness and improve self-control.
  • Understand and apply related models to assist the CBT process.

Participants will learn about the cognitive behavioural model, and other related approaches, and the key steps involved in therapeutic applications. Handy resources will be provided to assist participants after the course.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

To have an understanding of the CBT model.

  • To understand and be able to apply the key steps.
  • To be able to recognise in oneself, and others, where CBT might be able to be applied.
  • To be able to apply CBT techniques via other models.
