CHANGING BEHAVIOUR IN HEALTHCARE

A 1-day seminar

BEHAVIOUR CHANGE SKILLS are seen as important in influencing health behaviour, but there is a lack of agreement and understanding about what is meant by 'Behaviour Change Skills' (BCS). BCS are a combination of psychlogical approaches which can be applied in traditional clinical settings and are evidence based. These are 'Motivational Approaches' (adapted from Motivational Interviewing) and 'Cognitive Behavioural Approaches' (adapted from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). In order to use these effectively with patients/clients, professionals need a good understanding of the theory underlying health behavioural change and good interpersonal skills. This 1-day course sets out to provide both.

WHAT HEALTHCARE SETTINGS ARE APPROPRIATE?

Behaviour change is appropriate to a range of settings in Primary care including: Coronary Heart Disease, Obesity, Diabetes, Pain/Backpain, Smoking, Alcohol, Depression and Anxiety etc. Osteoporosis; Patients on medication/exercise/relaxation programmes.

WHO WILL BENEFIT?

Nurses, Doctors, (including GPs) Health Visitors, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and other Primary Care Staff including dietitians. Occupational Health Staff, Diabetes, Pain & CHD specialists, NSF Leads, Counsellors.

WHAT IF I DO NOT FIT INTO THESE CATEGORIES?

The seminar is suitable for anyone working in healthcare whose patients/clients need to change their behaviour.
