CHANGING BEHAVIOUR IN HEALTHCARE A 1-day seminar 2004 dates TBCBEHAVIOUR CHANGE SKILLS
are seen as important in influencing health behaviour, but there is a
lack of agreement and understanding about what is meant by 'Behaviour
Change Skills' (BCS). BCS are a combination of psychological
approaches which can be applied in traditional clinical settings and are
evidence based. This 1-day course sets out to provide both. WHAT HEALTHCARE SETTINGS ARE APPROPRIATE? Behaviour change is appropriate in: Coronary Heart Disease, Obesity, Diabetes, Pain/Backpain, Smoking, Alcohol, Depression and Anxiety etc. Osteoporosis; Patients on medication/exercise/relaxation programmes. WHO WILL BENEFIT? Nurses, Doctors, (including GPs) Health Visitors, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and other Primary Care Staff including dieticians. Occupational Health Staff, Diabetes, Pain & CHD specialists, NSF Leads, Counsellors. WHAT IF I DO NOT FIT INTO THESE CATEGORIES? The seminar is suitable for anyone working in healthcare whose patients/clients need to change their behaviour. LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of the day participants will :

PROGRAMME Registration 8.45 am - 9.30 am 0930-1030: SESSION 1: Behaviour Change: different methods Some underlying theory. Setting the scene for understanding the practical reality of helping patients change behaviour. Being client-centred - qualities & skills The prerequisites for successfully supporting your clients/patients. The right attitude, an open mind & the full range of skills: listening, reflecting, summarising and affirming. 1030-1100: COFFEE 1100-1200: Motivating change - specific strategies Building up your took kit of techniques to use in a flexible way in response to every patient's needs. Evidence base for this different way of working Some ammunition to convince you, your colleagues & your managers that this approach makes sense. 1200-1215: Discussion /questions 1215-1330: LUNCH BREAK 1330-1500: SESSION 3: Active & Reflective listening Realising the power of the most undervalued skill. Believing in it & getting some practice! Establishing readiness to change Understanding where patients/clients sit in the whole change process and how best to help. 1500-1515: TEA 1515-1600: SESSION 4: Importance and confidence Assessing & developing the two key elements of motivation The ambivalence grid Helping patients/clients through the pros & cons of contemplating change Questions and Answers - ENROLMENT Tuition:

Date: 1 week prior to seminar. THE SPEAKERS DYMPNA PEARSON, SRD, DipADP has played a key role in developing Behaviour Change Skills training for the dietetic and other healthcare professions. A State Registered Dietician, she has extensive experience of working in different clinical settings and has been responsible for developing NSF services for Coronary Heart Disease and Diabetes. This included delivering training on lifestyle change to multidisciplinary teams. She is a well known, lively and respected trainer in the NHS. PAULA HUNT, BSc
(Hons), SRD, was involved in the creation & delivery of the Health
Education Authority's flagship course, 'Helping People Change', during
the early 1990's & has become well known for her practical & friendly
approach to
skills based training. She has run course for the World Health Organisation
and is an internationally trained trainer in motivational interviewing.
Her book on Changing Behaviour has become an established part of the training
of dietetic and fitness professionals. |
