DEPRESSION has a devastating effect not just on the people suffering from it, but also on their families friends and work colleagues. The cost to the NHS and to industry of inadequate treatment is enormous. Early recognition and assessment is vital to effective treatment.

WHO WILL BENEFIT?

Nurses, Doctors, Health visitors, Occupational health staff, Counsellors and other health and social care professionals. This practical programme is designed for anyone working in a health or social care role in the community who works with people with depressive illnesses.

WHAT IF I DO NOT FIT INTO THESE CATEGORIES?

The seminar programme is suitable for anyone working with patients/clients who have depression. The list might include social workers, care home workers, voluntary sector workers, pharmacists, chiropodists, alternative practitioners, health promotion specialists, general hospital staff and people in related fields.

WHAT IS THE AIM OF THE SEMINAR?

The programme is designed to help you:

  • Increase your awareness & recognition of Depression
  • Develop a structured approach to assessment
  • Introduce you to a range of evidence based tools for use in assessment.
  • Develop your skills in assessing suicide risk

  • What is Depression?
  • Understanding the terminology of depression
  • WHO guidelines including criteria for major depression

10.40 - 11.05: COFFEE

11.05 - 12.30: SESSION 2:

  • Why is Depression missed in primary care?
  • Causes, risk factors and triggers
  • Assessment: What to/How to/When to
  • Use of screening & Assessment Tools

12.30 - 13.30: LUNCH BREAK

13.30 - 15.00: SESSION 3:

  • Assessing Suicide Risk
  • Developing appropriate Protocols within the workplace
  • Revisiting Case Studies

15.00 - 15.20: TEA

15.20 - 16.30: SESSION 4:

  • Developing communications & introducing new skills within your working environment
  • Taking care of the carers
  • Working together as a team
  • Evaluation and Close

THE SPEAKERS

The speakers include:

JANE ELWOOD RGN, is a Practice Nurse in a busy practice, where she is also involved in research projects. She is a trainer with the Medical Research Council and The Depression Care Training Centre. She runs regular Depression workshops for primary care and NHS staff around the U.K.
